An
Organic Crib Mattress Will Help Your Baby Sleep Better
A recent study in the current issue of
the Journal of Pediatrics finds hidden dangers in using soft cushioned bumpers around cribs and
bassinets. These bumpers supposedly stop babies from slamming or trapping their heads against the
bars of the crib, but researchers say they can lead to suffocation for the infant. Pediatric
researchers found that 27 babies and toddlers up to age 2 had been accidentally strangled or
suffocated by bumper pads and another 25 children had been injured.
The study team examined database
reviews coming from three U.S. Consumer Product Security Commissions on fatalities related to crib
bumpers and other crib-related injuries from 1985 to 2005. According to lead author from the study,
Dr. Bradley Thach, many babies lack the actual motor coordination in order to free themselves once
they become wedged between the bumper and an additional area. In some instances, if the bumper is
too soft the newborn's face can get pressed up against it, resulting in suffocation. If the bumper
is too firm the baby may climb up the pads and fall out from the crib.
The reports revealed that 11 infants
suffocated when their face relaxed against the bumper sleeping pad, 13 died after being wedged
between the bumper pad and another object, and 3 had been strangled by a bumper tie. All of the
pads had been found to be hazardous because of a space left involving the bottom of the fender pad
and also the bed mattress - where the small one's head could get put. Researchers state that your
bumper pads truly ought to not be placed in cribs merely because offer no profit and do much more
damage than good.
